Way back in ancient history (you know, before 2013), web designers would design two different websites at two different addresses.  One site was for mobile devices and one site for desktops.  It was a pain for developers, website owners, and users, but that changed with the birth of Responsive Web Design.  If a website is responsive, the end user will access it via the same URL and all of the elements on the page will shift or stack to fit the width of the device.  What this means is, the website will look good regardless of if it is viewed on a smart phone, tablet or desktop.  Remember the little “View Full Website” link that used to show up at the bottom of websites?  It’s no longer necessary because every user is shown the full website, it is just adjusted to fit on your device.

How do you know if your site is responsive?  Open your site in a browser, then take the window and minimize it’s width.  Does the website look the same and force you to scroll to see all of the information, or do the elements shift to keep the site readable within the new width?  You can also go here and check if Google feels your site is responsive:

If you don’t want to take my word on how important this is, you’d better listen to Google. As of April 21, Google will be taking this into account in determining who’s site ranks first.  Still not convinced?  Check out your analytics.  You will be surprised at how many visitors are coming to your site on a mobile device.  Don’t ignore this much traffic and make sure they see the best of your small business by ensuring all elements on your site are displaying in an accessible and beautiful way.
